The 20-year old Tampa Bay Lightning first took the ice in 1992. 12 years later, they were Stanley Cup champions. Tampa Bay took home their first Stanley Cup ring in 2004. They have also won one conference championship (2004) and 2 division championships (2003 and 2004). Famed Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was one of the original partners in the Lightning franchise.
The Lighting first qualified for the playoffs after the 1995-1996 season, led by scorer Brian Bradley. Tampa Bay had a great year on defense and knocked out the defending Stanley Cup champions, the New Jersey Devils by one game to take the eighth spot in the Eastern conference. Although they lost in six during the first round to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Lightning would be back eight years later for a crowning achievement.
In the 2003-2004 season, the Lightning went 46-22-8. Tampa Bay went into the playoffs and beat the Islanders in 5, the Canadiens in 4 and the Flyers in 7 before going on to face the Calgary Flames in the Stanley Cup finals. The series went a full 7 games and in the end, the Lightning proved to be too much for the flames. Tampa Bay won their first Stanley Cup and brought home their first and only Lightning championship ring. Ironically, the owner, William Davidson, also owned the Detroit Pistons and eight days later they won the NBA championship making him the first owner to win two championships in one year.
Replicas of the Lightning Stanley Cup ring from 2004 have been selling at a moderate pace on eBay lately. They have sold for as little a $15 and as much as $51. It’s an attractive ring with an image of the cup and a lightning bolt. The franchise may not be one of the NHL’s most legendary but a hockey collection isn’t complete without this one. The rings come in different variations including brass plated in silver and adorned with cubic zirconia. Others are 14K white gold over sterling silver with prong set CZ’s. They weigh around 127 grams, depending on the size fit.
